Five words you need — and two companions

☾ the story: The story tab follows a child who sets out to learn the world with a notebook. It is ours, not Hegel’s text: each page quietly loses what the argument loses in that scene. It mirrors; it never argues. Where it and Hegel differ, trust Hegel.
⌁ meanwhile, the machine: Teal notes inside the argument weigh each shape against machine learning — the bare sensor, the pattern-recognizer, the world model. Hegel wrote none of this; the comparison is the course’s. It is why an AI course starts its Hegel here.
universal: What holds itself steady across different instances — “now”, “here”, “I”, “thing”, “red”. The opposite of a bare singular. Sense-certainty’s whole drama is discovering that its words were universals all along.
sublate (aufheben): Hegel’s verb for how a shape fails: it is cancelled and kept. The wreckage is never thrown away — it becomes material for the next object.
in-itself / for-consciousness: What the object supposedly is independently of us, versus how it shows up for a knower. Experience is the discovery that the “in-itself” was an in-itself for consciousness — and the promotion of that discovery into a new object.
“for us”: Hegel’s observers — you, here. Consciousness never sees why its new object had to arrive; we watch the necessity from the balcony. (¶87: it happens “behind its back”.)
shape of consciousness: A whole stance toward the world: an object, a criterion of truth, and a way of failing built in. Sense-certainty, perception, and understanding are the first three.
