## Overview

This week separates **consciousness** from cognition, intelligence, language, and self-report. Hegel presents consciousness as a relation between a subject and an object that develops into self-consciousness and recognition. Freud and Hayles complicate the picture by showing how much cognition occurs outside conscious awareness.

Generative AI intensifies the question because fluent systems can produce first-person language without providing independent evidence of a first-person point of view. The task is neither to declare machine consciousness nor dismiss it by intuition, but to formulate criteria and examine what available evidence can support.

By the end of the week, you should be able to distinguish several meanings of consciousness, explain nonconscious cognition, and make a qualified judgment about claims of artificial consciousness.

## How does consciousness relate to machine learning?

Machine learning can classify, predict, generate, and adapt without any settled demonstration of subjective awareness. Training can also produce language about feelings or selfhood because such language occurs in the data. Behavioral competence therefore matters, but it does not by itself resolve the consciousness question.

## How does consciousness relate to human learning?

Humans learn both consciously and nonconsciously. Deliberate reflection can revise concepts and strategies, while habit, perception, affect, and bodily adjustment operate partly outside awareness. Metacognition—the capacity to monitor and redirect one's learning—depends on consciousness in some form, but not every component of learning does.

## Self-assessed weekly activity: Consciousness criteria lab

### 1. Begin with a machine-human chat

Start with this prompt:

> Help me construct criteria for consciousness without claiming that you are conscious or that you are not. Ask me to propose one criterion at a time. For each criterion, test a human borderline case and an AI case, identify what evidence is observable, and identify what remains an inference.

Continue until you have tested at least four criteria, such as reportability, integration, continuity, affect, embodiment, metacognition, or recognition.

### 2. Produce an artifact

Build a **criteria matrix** with rows for your four criteria and columns for:

- why the criterion might matter;
- evidence in an ordinary adult human;
- a human borderline case;
- evidence available for a current language model; and
- the unresolved inference.

Add a 250-word judgment using confidence language rather than a categorical verdict.

### 3. Reflect

- Which criterion was too broad or too narrow?
- Did fluent first-person language influence your judgment more than it should?
- Are you applying the same evidential standard to human and machine cases? Should you?
